London drivers believe mechanics have cheated them out of a total of £45million, new research shows.

More than 1 in 6 Londoners (18 per cent) claim to have been ripped off when visiting a garage, with the average person being overcharged a total of £164.86, according to a survey by car maintenance app company Engie.

The survey also revealed 43 per cent of Londoners feel anxious when taking their vehicle for a service, with 8 in 10 (78 per cent) concerned about how much money repairs are going to cost.

Meanwhile 40 per cent of motorists in the capital say they mistrust mechanics, and one in 10 (11 per ceent) are sceptical of what mechanics say when investigating problems.

A sixth (17 per cent) of Londoners believe they’ve been sold something they don’t actually need.

Gal Aharon, co-founder & CMO of Engie, said: “Mechanics may not actually be ripping customers off, but the research demonstrates the extent of UK drivers’ lack of confidence in mechanic quotes.

“They simply don’t understand what is being sold to them – and if it’s really necessary."

Car diagnostics app Engie connects to your car's computer, analysing the condition of the car and offering real time quotes from nearby mechanics.
