TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Chairman of Iran’s Expediency Council Ayatollah Mahmoud Hashemi Shahroudi warned against US schemes to change the Middle East map by splitting up regional countries.

Making changes in geographical borders and partitioning of regional countries are among the evil intentions that Washington is pursuing in the region, Ayatollah Hashemi Shahroudi said in a meeting with Syrian Ambassador to Tehran Adnan Mahmoud on Thursday.

“The United States has hatched a vicious plot to partition countries across the region and undermine the nations’ spirit of resistance in order to strengthen the Zionist regime (of Israel),” he said.

Hailing the Syrian army’s recent gains against Daesh (ISIL) in its fight against terrorism, the senior Iranian official said the US, unlike what it claims, is just pretending to fight Daesh in Iraq and Syria.

Referring to a recent attack by Israeli warplanes on the central province of Homs in Syria, Ayatollah Shahroudi said the aggression indicates that the Israeli regime is siding with the terrorists in the Arab country.

Late on Wednesday, Syria’s state TV said that Israeli warplanes launched an attack in central Syria and that Syrian air defenses hit back.

A Syrian army commander said on Wednesday night that the Israeli jet was targeted after it bombed the copper factory located to the south of Homs.

During the past few years, Israel has frequently attacked military targets in Syria in what is considered as an attempt to prop up terrorist groups that have been suffering heavy defeats against Syrian government forces.

Back in April 2015, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu officially admitted for the first time that the regime's military had conducted strikes in Syrian territory.

Damascus says Israel and its Western and regional allies are aiding Takfiri terrorist groups operating inside the Arab country while the Tel Aviv regime's military carries out such sporadic strikes against Syrian government forces. The Israeli regime has even set up field hospitals to treat wounded militants evacuated from Syria.
