Floods paralyse Texas as Hurricane Harvey continues its path of destruction

The devastation from Hurricane Harvey continues to paralyse the region, as life-threatening floods reach the rooftops of single-storey homes.

With some 30,000 residents seeking shelter from the storms, at least nine people are reported to have been killed in the Tropical storm so far.

One image in particular summed up the scale of the disaster, with a still from a traffic camera above a highway in Houston showing the road submerged beneath a mass of water (you can see the image in the gallery above).

Among the victims are a family of six who were killed when their van was swept away while a another man died when he attempted to swim through the floodwater.

The storm is showing no signs of abating today, with some 50 inches of rain set to fall down on the region.

The flooding will get worse in the days ahead and floodwaters will be slow to recede once Harvey finally moves on, according to the weather service.

And officials fear the death toll could soar once the water recedes.

A multibillion-dollar aid package is likely to be added to the £2.3 billion already announced by President Donald Trump to handle immediate needs, such as debris removal and temporary shelter for thousands of displaced residents.
